WINE PRODUCERS OF LA PORTE D'OR

An exceptional destiny :

The town of Pont-Saint-Esprit has been famous since ancient times for its gateway and especially its 1km long medieval Bridge, one of the rare crossings on the Rhone between kingdom and empire. Pont-Saint-Esprit is still today "La Porte d'Or de la Provence" sung by Frederic MISTRAL. The land of an excellent vintage was made famous in the "Virgile du Vivarais", by the late Louis PIZE: "Vin vigoureux , quand je te bois, mon coeur de rayons s'illumine et je revois, sur l'escalier de la colline encadré d'oliviers, le raisin qui mûrit au soleil de Pont-Saint-Esprit " translating: "Vigorous Wine, when I drink you, my heart of rays illuminates and I see again, on the hillside staircase, framed by olive-trees, the grapes which ripen in the sunlight of Pont-Saint-Esprit".
Origin and qualities :

The Wine producers of la Porte d'Or (S.C.A ) is a group which was created in 1928. It extends to 3 regions, within the limits of Gard, Ardeche and Vaucluse, and to the convergence of the Rhone and Ardeche.
The production is divided between approximately 50% vins de pays and vins de table, and 50% Côtes du Rhône with a strong presence in the Côtes du Rhône primeurs range.
Wines coming from " Vins de pays de la Principauté d'Orange " are developing.

The total production surface is 530 hectares including 340 hectares in the Côtes du Rhône appellation.

The land :

It is primarily made up of slopes and sandy, gravely terraces with some clay-limestone.

Its Mediterranean climate is strongly influenced by the mistral. One can find traces of wine production going back to the year 1254.
